New Music. A New Collective.
Instead of a conventional release where one gets everything upfront, starting from September 2016, we chose to rather release one song on the first Friday of every month until the end of the collection. This move was aimed at giving each song its time to shine. We wanted to put a strong focus on our songs this time. We were writing and recording as we went, so we could release them as soon as we could and not wait for a whole album to be completed before people get a chance to hear them!
In putting this focus on each song, the other exciting part of this collection is that each song got its own artwork designed by a different visual artist or designer, and its own music video directed by the most passionate pitch. Everyone involved in this collection of music, artwork, and film, formed part of the collective ‘Those Meddling Kids’. Instead of just a small album liner note, we will always take every opportunity to profile, advertise, and celebrate all those involved.
There are incredibly talented people out there, both locally and overseas that we have been lucky enough to work with, and want to work with. We didn’t just want it to be another job for them, we wanted them to be a part of something! We’re exciting about formalising this collective with them for the sole reason being that we can then share it with everyone who’s interested. Hopefully people like what they see and want to to work with them too.

HIGH SEAS STUDIOS
Based in Rosebank, High Seas is a recording studio and practice facility. If Shortstraw were to have a home, this would be it. It’s where we write, rehearse, and where we are recording and mixing this new material.
Jacob Israel is the moniker of self-taught experimental musician, producer and composer Jacob van der Westhuizen. Jacob is mastering all the songs in this collection from Westenhaus Mastering, his new mastering studio.
Based in Cape Town, Hylton is the first filmmaker we have collaborated with in the collection. He is currently working on the music video for T-Shirt.
BRENDAN ‘BUGSY’ BARNES
Bugs is one of the hardest working and respected young cinematographers in South Africa. He’s a hard hitting drummer, and a former child star. Bugsy was behind the lens for the Say Anything video, so it was great to work with him again, and inaugurated as a Meddling Kid. Bugsy has directed and shot the video for IGNORANCE IS BLISS.
DANI EUGENIE O’NEILL
Dani is the artist behind the cover for IGNORANCE IS BLISS. Currently in her 4th year of Multimedia/Photography at University Currently Known as Rhodes, Dani has quickly gotten the attention of our art world. A story teller, a little bit of everything, and a fan of Billy Ocean before she liked Frank Ocean.
Hamman is big time. Nick is the host of a morning show on 5fm, one of South Africa’s biggest commercial radio stations. He has very kindly given us some needle time on the first Friday of every month to debut and talk about each single as they are released. As our media partner, and good chommie who supports local music, he undoubtedly deserves to be a Meddling Kid.
ADARA SANCHEZ ANGUIANO
So we didnt meet Adara under the nicest of circumstances, but we feel privileged to have been connected, and honoured to have her in the collective. She was born in Seville, trained in fine arts in Seville, Belgium, and Cuenca. After that she got a Masters in illustration in Barcelona. She is now based out of Madrid. Adara is the artist behind the artwork for T-SHIRT.
FULL PROFILE COMING SOON.
We’re proud to have all our music equipment provided and endorsed by TOMS. With branches around South Africa, these okes run a great ship, and help out with all our instrument needs. They also helped provide the backline used in the video for KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY.
Dillon is an exciting illustrator and designer based in Johannesburg. Dillon has designed the cover for THE FOURTH SINGLE. He got our attention when we saw that he was giving away high versions of his work if you donate to burn charity Children of Fire. So Shortstraw has made a donation to the charity for this work.
